Background of the Organization

Biedrība “Integrācijas centrs ‘Atvērtās durvis’” (Open Doors Integration Center) was founded on 17 August 2004 in Ventspils, but started its activities in Kuldīga in 2010. It is a non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Ventspils, Latvia, whose primary mission is to promote social integration, community development, and equal opportunities for all members of society, particularly migrants, ethnic minorities, refugees, and socially vulnerable groups. The organization was established in response to the growing need for inclusive social services and community-based support mechanisms that address social exclusion, language barriers, unemployment risks, and limited access to public services.

The organization operates as a community-oriented social service provider and advocacy platform, implementing a wide range of educational, cultural, and social support programs. These include language learning activities, civic education, employment readiness support, social counseling, material assistance, and community engagement events. A significant part of its work is dedicated to humanitarian assistance, such as organizing soup kitchen services, distributing donated food and clothing, and coordinating the Food Bank project “Paēdušai Latvijai,” which is carried out in cooperation with national retail partners such as Rimi Latvia.

Open Doors Integration Center also plays an important role in supporting Ukrainian nationals and other displaced persons by organizing social support programs, community events, and access to essential services. These activities aim not only to provide immediate assistance but also to encourage social participation and emotional well-being among beneficiaries.

The organization actively cooperates with local municipalities, social service departments, educational institutions, private companies, and international partners. Many of its projects are funded by European Union programs, particularly the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+), which supports initiatives focused on social inclusion, poverty reduction, and integration of disadvantaged groups. Through these partnerships, Open Doors is able to implement sustainable, professionally managed projects that align with national and European social policy objectives.

By combining practical social services with communication, education, and community-building activities, the Open Doors Integration Center contributes significantly to strengthening social cohesion in Ventspils and surrounding regions. Its work demonstrates the important role that NGOs play in complementing public social services and in promoting intercultural understanding within Latvian society.
